How SchoolCam Connects to Google Drive

SchoolCam connects to Google Drive using the Google Drive API. We use the most secure and least broad type of access possible by requesting limited write-only access.

This means that SchoolCam only has access to:

• Folders that were explicitly created through SchoolCam
• Folders that were manually granted access to SchoolCam
• Files and folders created using SchoolCam

SchoolCam does not receive full access to your Google Drive.

This permission model is designed to maximize privacy and security for schools while still allowing teachers and administrators to upload and organize photos efficiently.

Recommended Setup for Schools

Because of how Google Drive permissions work with limited-access applications, we strongly recommend using one dedicated IT-managed account to configure your SchoolCam environment.

When setting up SchoolCam for your school:

1. Use a Google account managed by your IT department
2. Use this account to:
   • Configure the SchoolCam team
   • Invite users
   • Configure the root folder
   • Create shared folders used by teachers and staff

This creates a more consistent permission structure and avoids many common issues.

Important Permission Behavior

A key concept to understand is:

SchoolCam can only modify folders that were originally created through SchoolCam by the currently signed-in user.

For example:
